Mexico is known for its "tribus urbanas" or urban tribes. Punks, goths, metal fans, skaters, rockabillies, are all largely accepted but the Emo subculture is met with hatred. In 2008 violence broke out against Emo kids perpetrated by other subcultures. Emo kids are derided for being privileged, seen as posers often coming form more affluent neighbourhoods and are a target for homophobia. These portraits were taken at Plaza Insurgentes the scene of a previous gathering that turned into a riot prompting riot police to defend them, causing even more angst. This series was part of Head On Photo Festival.
